The Life and Music of Samuel Barber at the Carmel Valley Library on Feb. 8

February’s free family music program sponsored by the Friends of the Carmel Valley Library will be presented on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 7:00 p.m. in the library’s community room. It will explore the life and music of Samuel Barber, one of America’s greatest composers of art songs, with narration by Joanne Regenhardt, songs by soprano Janelle DeStefano, and piano accompaniment and solos by James Frimmer. Samuel Barber (1910 - 1981) was an American composer of orchestral, opera, choral, and piano music. His Adagio for Strings for orchestra is his most popular composition and is widely considered a masterpiece of modern classical music. He was awarded Pulitzer Prizes for music for his opera Vanessa and Concerto for Piano and Orchestra. The program will last 50 minutes.

James Frimmer received his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from the University of Redlands, where he also served as the staff accompanist and won several school competitions. He is currently active in chamber music in the San Diego area, and is on the vocal arts faculty at SDSU as a staff accompanist. This is his eighth year working with Janelle DeStefano and Joanne Regenhardt on their series of programs on the life and music of famous composers.

Janelle DeStefano received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from USC and is a professor of voice at Santa Monica College. She has sung in opera and orchestral works throughout the United States and is a winner of many competitions including those of the Metropolitan Opera.

Joanne Regenhardt began singing in San Diego with the Starlight Opera in 1955. Since then she has sung in oratorios and performed as a soloist with symphony orchestras and in recitals and throughout Southern California. She began this series of programs with the life and music of Johannes Brahms, and has since written and narrated programs on Frederic Chopin, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and Claude Debussy. The latter was performed at this Library one year ago.

Pianist Michael Chang at the Carmel Valley Library on Feb. 29

A special free family music program sponsored by the Friends of the Carmel Valley Library will be presented on Wednesday, Feb. 29 at 7:00 p.m. in the library’s community room. It will feature pianist Michael Chang who will perform works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Liszt, Lowell Liebermann, and Sergei Prokofiev. The program will last 45 minutes.

Michael Chang is a senior at Torrey Pines High School. He has studied piano since the age of five and has won numerous competitions in Northern and Southern California, and several state-level competitions. He is presently studying under Dr. Felix Tao Chang, a professor of music at Azusa Pacific University. During this past summer he attended the International Institute for Young Musicians at the University of Kansas, and was invited to Austria where he performed with the Vienna Residence Orchestra. In addition to his piano studies he gives a monthly concert at the Patrician Retirement Home in La Jolla and teaches piano at the Logan Heights Elementary School in the Students Teaching ARTS program. Michael also plays cello with San Diego Youth Symphony Orchestra.
