Leap Year Special: 2 Free Library Concerts in Feb, 2012

This February, we get 2 free concerts at the Carmel Valley Library, one on Feb. 8 and one on Feb. 29! The Friends of the Carmel Valley Library will present The Life and Music of Samuel Barber on Feb. 8. This program will explore the life and music of Samuel Barber, one of America’s greatest composers of art songs, with narration by Joanne Regenhardt, songs by soprano Janelle DeStefano, and piano accompaniment and solos by James Frimmer. Then on Feb. 29, pianist Michael Chang will perform works by Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Liszt, Lowell Liebermann, and Sergei Prokofiev.

Free Concert at the CV Library on Jan 18, 2012

January’s free family music program, sponsored by the Friends of the Carmel Valley Library, is on Wednesday, Jan. 18 at 7:00 p.m. It will feature guitarists Arthur Golden and Chan Jenuine in a program of American folk songs, blues, rags, etc. The program will last 45 minutes. Free Library Concert, Dec 14, 2011

The San Diego Jewish Women's Choir will perform at the Carmel Valley Library on Wednesday, Dec. 14th at 7:00 p.m. The program will include a mix of religious and secular songs in Hebrew, Ladino, Yiddish, and English. It will include songs for Hanukkah and end with Rogers and Hammerstein’s “You’ll Never Walk Alone” from Carousel and “Hatikvah,” Israel’s National Anthem. Free Library Concerts, November 2011

There will be two free concerts at the CV Library in November: on Nov. 9th at 7:00 pm, a Piano, Bassoon, and Flute Trio will perform music by C P E Bach, Beethoven, Casimir Lalliet, and Elaine Fine; then on Nov. 30th at 7:00 pm, pianist Dan Yu will perform a program of music by Mozart, Liszt, Schumann, and Chopin. CV Library Free Concert, New 2011-12 Season!

It's time for a new season of Free Family Music Programs at the CV Library, sponsored by the Friends of the Carmel Valley Library! The first performance will be on Wednesday, September 14th at 7:00 p.m. in the library’s community room. It will feature tenor Aleksandr Agamirzov who will perform arias and songs by Verdi, Rachmaninoff, Nicolas Brodzky, Rudolfo Falvo, Luigi Denza, Mitch Leigh, and others. CV Library Summer 2011

Lots of summer activities at the CV Library this summer: Reading Programs, Senior Yoga, Youth Storytime & Craft time, Tutoring and more! For instance, you can join the Summer Reading Program, this year for Children, Teens and Adults. The theme for children this year is One World, Many Stories. For teens, it is You Are Here. For adults, the theme is Novel Destinations At A Glance. Please sign up online on San Diego Public Library's website starting on June 15. Earn prizes for reading! For children and teens read 10 books or 10 hours (parents can read to their children). Adults (18+) for reading: 5 books + 1 review or 5 books + 5 books read with a child.

Free Family Music Program at the CV Library, June 8, 2011

There will be a free family music program at the CV Library on June 8, 2011, featuring Operatic Solos, Duets, and Trios. Sopranos Mariko Kanamitsu and Pamela Narbona, and baritone David Marshman will perform songs by Mendelssohn and arias by Offenbach, Mozart, and Donizetti from The Tales of Hoffmann, The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni, The Magic Flute, The Elixir of Love, and Cosi Fan Tutte. They will be accompanied by pianist Mizue Shapiro. The program begins at 7:00 PM and will last 45 minutes. Free CV Library Concert, May 11, 2011

The Carmel Valley Library's free family music program for May is on Wednesday, May 11th at 7:00 p.m.. Mary Lu Brandwein and Yuki Easter will present a program of music for two traditional Japanese instruments, shakuhachi and koto. The former is an end-blown bamboo flute with a unique sound that is familiar to many because of its wide use in movies. The koto is a stringed instrument sometimes called the "Japanese Harp." The program will last 45 minutes. The concerts are sponsored by the Friends of the Carmel Valley Library. The Library is located at 3919 Townsgate Drive in Carmel Valley. CV Library Closed thru Jan 3, 2011

The Carmel Valley Library appears to be closed until January 3. The CV Rec Center is open this week, but will close over the weekend (Friday to Sunday, Jan 2).

Free Library Concerts, Jan 12 & 26, 2011

The first free concert at the Carmel Valley Library this January is on Wed., Jan. 12th at 7:00 p.m. It will explore the life of Claude Debussy: flower child, impressionist, and revolutionary, with narration by Joanne Regenhardt, vocals by Janelle DeStefano, and piano accompaniment and solos by James Frimmer. The program will last 45 minutes. The second free music program is on Wed., Jan. 26th at 6:00 p.m., and will feature several advanced flute students of Elena Yarritu. They will be accompanied by pianist Diane Snodgrass. The program will last about 90 minutes. The concerts are sponsored by the Friends of the Carmel Valley Library, which is located at 3919 Townsgate Drive in Carmel Valley. Free Library Concert on Dec 8 at 7 PM

December's free concert at the Carmel Valley Library is on December 8th at 7:00 PM, featuring Semi-Sweet, a group of local musical moms who will present a program of holiday songs. Semi-Sweet was formed 11 years ago and has since performed at a variety of public and private venues in San Diego, including this library. Its members are Linda Bessey, Christine Francis, Elizabeth Ingersoll, Carolyn Johnson, Raquel Lonas, Mary Beth Rane, and Karen Schooley. The program will last 45 minutes. A free concert sponsored by The Friends of the Carmel Valley Library will be presented on Wed., Nov 17th at 7:00 p.m. in the library’s community room. It will feature trombonist Eric Starr, pianist Denise Fillion, and bassoonist Ryan Simmons in a program of music by Antonio Vivaldi, Robert Schumann, Georg Christoph Wagenseil, and Stjepan Sulek. Halloween Events at the CV Library

October 2010

A number of Halloween themed storytimes next week at the Carmel Valley Library, and a Halloween movie. On Tuesday, October 26 at 4pm, there's an Afternoon Halloween Storytime. Then on Friday, October 29, there's an infant storytime at 10am and a preschool storytime at 11am. Finally, on Saturday, October 30 at 11:30am, there will be a showing of "The Nightmare Before Christmas". Have the kids dress up in costume for all these fun events.

It will feature flutist Jean Lewis-Boehringer in a program of music by J. S. Bach, Carl Reinecke, Martin Amlin, and Samuel Barber. She will be accompanied by pianist Bryan Verhoye. SilverWood at the CV Library, Oct. 13, 2010

October’s free family music program sponsored by The Friends of the Carmel Valley Library will be presented on Wed., Oct. 13th at 7:00 p.m. in the library’s community room. It will feature SilverWood in a program of Celtic music (see the SilverWood Web Page.) The performers will be flutist Diane Wilson, guitarist Gary Tuttle, and fiddler Carol McCollum. The Friends of Carmel Valley Branch Library are having a big bargain book sale on Saturday, Sept. 25 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the front patio of the Library.  Come and support the Library by purchasing books, tapes, videos, and assorted treasures.  All proceeds benefit the Library and are matched by the City. Music at the CV Library, Sept. 15, 2010

September’s free family music program sponsored by The Friends of the Carmel Valley Library will be presented on Wed., Sept. 15th at 7:00 p.m. in the library’s community room. It will feature Duo Zelo in a program of contemporary Latin music. The performers will be flutist Joyce Hayutin and guitarist Anthony Cutietta. The program will last 45 minutes.

Joyce Hayutin received her B. A. in Flute Performance from Towson State University in Maryland. She also attended the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore. She has been performing professionally in symphonies and ensembles, and teaching since the age of 16. Joyce currently lives in Carmel Valley where she teaches in her home studio. She is an active member of several organizations and is a founding member of San Diego Coastal Flutes.

Anthony Cutietta received his B. A. in Classical Guitar Performance from San Diego State University. He performs throughout Southern California in various venues and also teaches. He is a member of the Music Teachers Association of California and the Guitar Foundation of America.
